Baby Food!

The Kindergarten classes are working together to collect and count baby food for In Jesus' Name food pantry. Before we started this project we took a trip to visit Ms. April. She talked to us about the shelter, reflected on previous years and encouraged us to help her feed the babies who don't have enough to eat.

During work periods students are counting the baby food. They are learning to recognize sets of 10. This is a beneficial tool as we begin to practice counting numbers past ten. 

After the students have counted the jars during work periods they record the number they found. Students are practicing recording in different ways. Some students choose to write numbers, other students draw pictures, and some students will write tallies. These are all skills we have practiced in Math workshop. 

Students know that if we fill up our entire baby food calculator that we have filled one crate. They also recognize that this means that have collected ten, tens which is really 100 baby food jars! If this happens the class celebrates, replaces an empty crate with a full one, and begin the count over. Yesterday we filled our first crate and counted 100 jars, very exciting indeed!

After work periods we double check our work. As a whole group activity we count the baby food, record our findings and discuss the total. How many more did we get today? How many until we have another 100?

You can see our Kindergarten collection growing day by day. The Earth class and the Water class hope to fill many, many crates by the time Thanksgiving break comes! Please help us with this quest!

 I encourage you to think of creative ways that your child can earn baby food to bring in to add to our count. The students feel a strong sense of responsibility and connection with this collection as we discuss it everyday. When the collection is over we will deliver it to In Jesus' Name and talk to Ms. April about our accomplishments.
