Mexico!

It has been so exciting to learn new information about Mexico. We celebrated Day of the Dead, made homemade guacamole, practiced a Mexican hat dance and more. Throughout the last week of our study we will continue to discuss and explore this wonderful place in different ways. 

Students could choose to say the name and one memory of the person they were honoring. As MJ places the Marigold on his tomb he says "I honor my grandpa."

Students watch as Andy honors someone whom he loves. Every student was quiet and respectful toward one another as they took turns placing the flowers on their tombs. 

Throughout the week we made skeleton masks to wear during parts of the ceremony.

The students learned how these masks are a popular symbol during the Day of the Dead and are often worn in Mexico throughout the celebration.

After the celebration was over the Marigolds were planted. They are now outside for you to see as you enter into the school everyday. 

Today the students made guacamole using a mortar and a pestle. After we chopped and sliced all the ingredients it was our job to mix and pound them all together. 

  The strong smell of cilantro added to the taste of our guacamole. 

Andy peels and smashes with ease. He is excited to try the guacamole!

Some students were a little hesitant to try the mixture. However, in the end everyone was brave and enjoyed the dip. 

James digs right in and is not afraid to get dirty. He is excited to eat! 

After the lemon and lime juices were added Dash gives one final mix. Now we are ready to eat!

It was a messy job but the end result was most definitely worth it. The mortar was empty and our bellies were full!
