What makes a garden a garden?

The past few weeks the Kindergarten Water class has been exploring gardens and different types of flowers. We have learned a lot of exciting new information about what flowers need to grow and how we can take care of our garden. Throughout the classroom and in the studio we are engaging in work connecting all of this information. It has been wonderful to see all of the beautiful work the children are completing throughout the day.

We know that a garden is a garden if there is a plan made for the flowers and if someone is going to take care of it. We each had a chance to plant a vegetable seed. The choices were bean, pea, raddish and beet. We are watching to see which seeds grow the fastest and which take longer to grow. 

Do plants need soil to grow? We are finding the answer to this question as we watch our pea seed. We soaked a cotton ball with water, placed our seeds in the middle of the cotton ball and closed the small plastic bag. We did not seal the bottom bag to see if that made a difference in plant growth.  

We are building wire sculptures in the studio. The students shape the wires and try and replicate the plant that is on the table.  

It has been such a nice treat having an experienced gardener like Ms. Pargellis come in to teach us more about flowers. She brought in flowers for us to view and told us where we could find these flowers growing wild throughout different parts of the world. 

James uses sponges to paint our planter. We planted yellow and purple pansies for our school. I hope you enjoy them as you walk into school every morning!
